The button, from jewel to fashion accessory
Event organised by Fondazione Querini Stampalia
"Utility, decoration, variety and novelty": a workshop to learn to recognise the different types of buttoning through the sources of the past. Thanks to manuscripts, objects, and iconographic sources, the variety of functions that the button has had in the everyday life from the late Middle Ages to the threshold of contemporaneity will be identified. Are they jewellery for the person or accessories for clothing? The focus will be on the role of glass in imitating precious products. For the occasion the family wardrobe will be opened to show visitors a precious set of brilli, glass buttons, worn in the 18th century by the Querini family.
