Christina Connett Brophy, PhD, is Senior Vice President of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Director of Museum Galleries at Mystic Seaport Museum. She is the former Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Chair for the Chief Curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where she curated over 30 exhibitions and authored and/or edited all related publications on maritime and other subjects ranging from fine art and climate change to whale conservation, including De Wind is OP! Climate, Culture and Innovation in Dutch Maritime Painting; Whales Today!; The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage Round the World; Thou Shalt Knot: Clifford W. Ashley; and A Wild Note of Longing: Albert Pinkham Ryder and a Century of American Art. She has secured ground-breaking institutional partnerships, including the US Navy, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and worked extensively with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and others on developing exhibitions and programs on whale conservation and ocean health. She has lectured extensively in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and the USA on cartography, visual arts, maritime history, and other topics.
In addition to her time at Mystic Seaport Museum, she has taught Art History and Visual Culture at both Rhode Island School of Design and University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and has been an executive in tangible asset management and commercial art. She has a BA from Northwestern University, an MA from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and a PhD from the Universitat de València in Valencia, Spain, with specialties in visual culture, the history of art and cartography.
Crawford Alexander Mann III. joined Telfair Museums in 2021 as Director of Curatorial Affairs and Chief Curator, with responsibility for overseeing all of the organization’s programmatic activities and for curating its collection of pre-1945 American and European fine art. Mann’s appointment at Telfair followed nearly five years as Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC), where he oversaw a collection of 25,000 works on paper and created the 2021 catalogue and traveling exhibition Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano. Other prior appointments include the Chrysler Museum of Art (Norfolk, VA) and the RISD Museum of Art (Providence, RI). He holds degrees from Yale University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has received research fellowships from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, and other organizations. He has lectured for Princeton University, Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Glass Forum, the Accademia di San Luca, the Casa di Goethe, the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, and other organizations. Mann studies American art within international dialogues and exchanges, from neoclassical sculpture and the Grand Tour to 20th-century African American and Asian American art. He has developed publications and exhibitions on Raphael, Thomas Cole, Civil War photography, Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Hart Benton, art of the American West, and Civil Rights Era photography.
