Perlere and Impiraresse

Event organised by Comune di Venezia

A series of photographs from the twentieth century to today presents the ancient craft of “perlere” and “impiraresse”. Grammatically only in the feminine, "impiraressa", allows us to understand how it was exclusively women, since childhood, to string beads.
Hard work, necessitating great patience, carried out at home or near the house, which allowed a small, extra income for the subsistence of the whole family.
Thanks to the exhibition, realised in collaboration with the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice, we can appreciate a precious skill, testified by the reproduction of historical photos that portray the typical life of the Campo, with women stringing beads together, while children were playing their games. Vintage photos are flanked by contemporary images of necklaces from the Murano Glass Museum.
