The installation Rolls and Sheets started from a meeting with Alberto Valese, a master and artist in the art of marbled paper. A few years ago, they promised to collaborate and create a project that crossed the two materials: paper and glass. The idea did not come to fruition: Alberto passed away. On the occasion of The Venice Glass Week 2024, Burato presents the work to pay tribute to the work and memory of his late friend and artist.
Michele Burato (b. Italy, 1957) began to fuse sections of old canes and murrine, using an ancient technique, into polychrome plates in the 1980s. After an almost alchemistic experimentation, he creates plates by fusing strips of wire, fine powders and fragments of coloured glass, resulting in abstract compositions. Some plates remain as such, others leave the studio to be heated and modelled. The final works: vases and sculptures in mellow colours.
