In “Like Two Drops of Water” an aluminum cord suspends a glass orb above a grounded partner. The work references the atomic phenomenon whereby two drops of water merge into an undifferentiated whole–a phenomenon parallelled by romantic partnering, when two discrete identities merge into a singular “couple.” This metaphor is reinforced by the design’s otherworldly, lush beauty. Where would such a lamp live, if not in rose-hued fantasy? If the title calls to mind a love song, this is because there is likley one embedded within the work. In Cattaneo’s oeuvre, personal narrative is the ground on which the whimsical and surreal thrives.
In “Genesis,” Cattaneo brings together a constellated world of reference. She mentions nebulas, cloud seeding, the Big Bang, genesis, eggs, and origins. This conceptual cloud coalesces into a form that is part tree, part serpent, and part oversized jewelry setting. Again the artisanship in the glasswork is highly involved and technically sophisticated. The sinuous cast aluminum base supports three luminous glass eggs–each containing within itself a galaxy of color and effect.
