Blue stands for romance, especially for the romantic longing for the unattainable, the infinite and the absolute, for melancholy, for romantic love. Leonardo da Vinci describes in the Book of Painting the essence and effect of blue as immaterial, not a colour of the air, but a metaphysical mixture of sunlight with the “blackness of the world eclipse”.
