This glass dress highlights Ireland’s Cervical Check scandal, an appalling example of gender inequality within Irish healthcare. Inspired by cancerous cervical cells, the surface pattern is similar to misread samples taken from women in Ireland between 2011-2018. As a result of these misdiagnoses hundreds of women lost their lives. The work’s title brings with it a positive message aiming to encourage women to attend regular cervical screen tests.
Alison Mac Cormaic (Ireland, 1971)’s practice centres on working with glass, recording through drawing, and celebrating colour.
Originally from Scotland and now based in Ireland, she studied Architectural Glass at Edinburgh College of Art (1993) and for a Masters in Design History at The National College of Art and Design, Dublin (2016). Alison has completed a number of large installation projects and exhibited in Ireland, England, Italy and France.
